Many botanicals are naturally occurring compounds and their extracts have been isolated and processed into useful medicines. Ayurvedic herbs are commonly used as ingredients for dietary supplements and herbal medicines. The extracts of herbs are highly effective as antioxidants, antiseptics, tonics, digestive aids, diuretics, sedatives, digestive stimulant, stomachic relives, and antibacterial agents. They are also used to increase blood flow, regulate menstrual flow, promote weight loss, treat allergies, and treat cancer. These herbal medicines and their extracts are also used for manufacturing safety medications. Botanical Drugs: These are drugs that are produced from botanical products or derive from plants. They are usually synthetically manufactured from plant compounds or extracts. These ingredients may contain herbs such as gotu kola, black cohosh, ginseng, damiana, or licorice; or chemical additives such as dimethicone, phenol carbolic acid, polyethylene glycolate, or sodium benzoate. These substances are used in preparing dosage forms for dietary supplements. The various synthetic chemical additives improve the shelf-life and stability of these botanical products. Dietary Supplements: Here are many preparations which can be consumed in place of traditional medicine. These preparations contain botanicals and other ingredients that are considered suitable for human consumption. These include health food supplements that are prepared from herbs, and preparations that are made from a combination of different types of botanicals and other ingredients. Some of the most popular dietary supplements include echinacea, which improve immunity and is used to treat viral and bacterial infections; vitamin C, which is widely used to fight off infection; aloe vera, which increase skin elasticity; licorice, which is used to treat colds and reduce fatigue; and soy, which is widely used to increase strength and energy. It is important that you purchase your products from a reputable company. While purchasing, check the ingredients list and make sure that the quantity of each ingredient is indicated. Also, ensure that the botanicals are botanically standardized. When you are purchasing an ingredient list, always ask the vendor how it is processed and if it contains any fillers or coloring. Ask questions and insist on clear details of the processing procedure so that you are ensured that your food supplements do not contain ingredients which are unfit for human consumption.
